Sizing Access Structures for Data Warehouses

چکیده
Data warehousing is an emergent important data management technology having a substantial impact on enterprise decision support and being used in many industries {recent estimates place the market size at $9 billion for 1997. Data warehouses are orders of magnitude larger than conventional databases and are typically subjected to a mix of complex, ad-hoc queries. These queries often access signiicant fractions of the underlying data yet must be answered interactively. Several indexing schemes have been proposed to improve warehouse query performance, namely, value-list, projection and bit-sliced indexes. These access structures are currently being ooered by many of the major warehouse system vendors including Sybase, Oracle and Red Brick. Because of the large size of the data warehouses, however, these indexes come with very high costs (sizes). Thus, choosing to create the wrong index could potentially have very substantial penalties. To date, no work has been done on index selection, even though it is an often crucial step of the physical design process. In this paper, we develop exact cost models of the above warehouse indexes to help guide the practitioner through this process. Based on these cost models, we also perform an in-depth computational study of these indexes, which yields signiicant theoretical insights into the nature and behavior of these indexing schemes.

Multiobjective Sourcing and Lot Sizing of Drug with Considering Multi-Sourcing and Lateral Transshipment in Stochastic Conditions with Simulation Optimization Method
In this paper, the issue of integrated supplier selection and inventory policy for a drug distribution company with multiple warehouses is examined. In this research, warehouses are faced with stochastic demand and inventory of their medicines is provided by one or more suppliers that are located in a given set of candidates with price, quality and characteristics of the disruption. In addition...
متن کاملOracle Data Warehouse Sizing with EMC Symmetrix DMX-4 and Dell R900
This white paper provides an overview of how to size a data warehouse using an EMC Symmetrix DMX-4 4500 when attached to Dell R900 servers. The sizing conforms to the standards defined in the Oracle Optimized Warehouse Initiative (OWI), and adheres to EMC best practices for Oracle data warehouses.
متن کاملIndex and Materialized View Selection in Data Warehouses
Database management systems (DBMSs) require an administrator whose principal tasks are data management, both at the logical and physical levels, as well as performance optimization. With the wide development of databases and data warehouses, minimizing the administration function is crucial. This function includes the selection of suitable physical structures to improve system performance. View...
متن کاملSEQUENTIAL PENALTY HANDLING TECHNIQUES FOR SIZING DESIGN OF PIN-JOINTED STRUCTURES BY OBSERVER-TEACHER-LEARNER-BASED OPTIMIZATION
Despite comprehensive literature works on developing fitness-based optimization algorithms, their performance is yet challenged by constraint handling in various engineering tasks. The present study, concerns the widely-used external penalty technique for sizing design of pin-jointed structures. Observer-teacher-learner-based optimization is employed here since previously addressed by a number ...
متن کاملRetailer’s Lot-sizing Policy under Two Warehouses and Two Levels of Delay Permitted Using Algebraic Method
The main purpose of this paper is to modify Huang’s model [13] by considering two warehouses. In addition, we try to use algebraic method to determine the optimal lot-sizing policy for the retailer under two warehouses and two levels of delay permitted. This paper provides this algebraic approach that could be used easily to introduce the basic inventory theories to younger students who lack th...
